Growing up, we had a sweet lady that lived acrossed the street from us, Alberta Anderson. We didn't call her Alberta though, we called Grandma Berta! I don't remember her husband very well, as he died when I was very young, but she and her husband treated my family like their own. She spoiled my brother and I sooo much, we thought she was our grandma, so hence the named "Grandma Berta."
She LOVED to cook. I can remember many of evenings, my mom coming home from work to find a full cooked meal sitting on our stove. I can appreciate this more being a mom now. How awesome that would have been to walk in your house after a full day of work to see supper already made for you? Might I add, she made the BEST banana bread EVER. When I came home from college to visit on a weekend, she would always send a loaf of it back with me to share with my roommates! She also loved to sew and would always make me skirts and dress up clothes for my dollies. When she would come back from a trip or come back from visiting her daughter my brother and I were ALWAYS excited, cuz we knew she would have a present for us! These are just a few of the many memories I have of her....but the ONE memory that I will ALWAYS have of her, is her ring box!
Grandma Berta kept this ring box in her dresser drawer. As a little girl, I can remember spending many of hours sitting on her living room floor playing and trying on ALL the rings in this little metal container. I LOVED THEM ALL. I would put several rings on EACH finger, then rearrange them just to do it over again.
A couple years before she moved to a nursing home, she gave me this ring box as she knew nobody loved that little tin of rings more than me! Grandma Berta died when I was a senior college and how I miss her so!
This morning as I was cleaning out my jewelry armoire, I found this little tin of rings that I had carefully placed in the back of the amoire for safe-keeping. It brought a smile to my face, as I had briefly forgotten about this tin of rings and AND I knew MY little girl would love these rings just as much as I did!
These pictures bring tears to my eyes, as I know Grandma Berta would have LOVED to sit in her rocking chair watching my OWN little girl play with the "tin of rings."
